Install a New Release

Updated on

You will need to retrieve and download the new [i]merchant release from Computac’s FTP site . . .

  • Navigate to the appropriate section of the FTP site:  ftp.computac.com/sq1/download/merchant.  To save time, you can create a desktop shortcut that takes you directly to this location.
  • Once in the appropriate section of the FTP site, double-click on the [i]merchant .zip file.  The file will have a release number embedded within its name.
  • The File download dialogue box appears, asking if you want to save the file.  Click on the Save button.
  • The Save As dialogue box pops up.  Save the file to the “Computac” folder on your server’s “C” drive.
  • When the file is saved, a new dialogue box appears.  Click on “Open” within this dialogue box.
  • Another dialogue box appears.  Within this box, click on “Extract”.  Extract the file to the “Computac” folder on your server’s “C” drive.  You have just unzipped the file.

Now you are ready to install the new [i]merchant release—first to your server, then to individual workstations.

Prior to installing the new release, be sure to uninstall the old [i]merchant release.  To uninstall the old [i]merchant release:

  • On your server, click on the Start button at the lower left corner of your PC screen.  Select the Control Panel option, then click on the Add or Remove Programs icon.  In the list of programs that appears, highlight [i]merchant, then click on the “Remove” button.  Wait until the system prompts you that the remove has been completed.
  • Repeat this procedure on every workstation in your store that has [i]merchant on it.

Before installing the new release onto your server, be sure that no one is running [i]merchant in your store.  Once you have confirmed that, do the following:

  • On your server, navigate to the “Computac” folder on your “C” drive.  Two subfolders should be there:  I Merchant Setup, and Documentation.  Open the I Merchant Setup folder.
  • In the I Merchant Setup subfolder, double-click on “setup.exe”.  Accept the defaults.  On the second screen that appears during this process, be sure to select the “Everyone” option.  Once you have gone through the succession of screens and accepted the defaults, the new [i]merchant release is now on your server.  But you still need to get the database versions in sync.

To get the [i]merchant database versions in sync, do the following:

  • On the server, double-click on your desktop [i]merchant icon to run it.  A Database Version Error dialogue box will appear.  It will ask if you want to update the database.  Click on the “Yes” button.
  • An [i]merchant Database Update dialogue box appears.  The Database User field at the top left of the box should be filled in with “sa”.  In the Password field, key in your [i]merchant administrative password.  Then, either press Enter on your keyboard or click on the “Apply Update” button in the dialogue box.
  • The small window under the “Database Updates Results” section of the dialogue box will fill in with the elements being updated.  When the process is complete, a message box will pop up informing you that the database updates have completed.  Just click on “OK”.  Close out of the Database Update dialogue box by clicking on the “Close” button at the bottom of the screen.
  • At this point, simply double-click on your [i]merchant desktop icon, and log in as usual.  The new release has been installed on your server, and you should be all set.

To install the new release on other workstations in the store:

  • If you did not yet uninstall the old [i]merchant release from these workstations, be sure to do so now.  And, again, make sure no users are currently logged in to [i]merchant.
  • On each applicable workstation, navigate to the shared “Computac” folder on the “C” drive.
Once you have gone through the succession of screens and accepted the defaults, the new [i]merchant release is now on the workstation.
  • Repeat this procedure for each applicable workstation.
